Historical relics

With their exciting inscriptions, rune stones give us an insight into life around the year 1000, when the time of the Christian missionaries arrived. Stones were raised in memory of men who had died in foreign countries. Of the 55 known rune stones in Skåne, four are in our municipality. One of these was found in 1650, walled into the tower of Holmby Church, where it was being used as a cornerstone. It was not until 1899 that archaeologists managed to persuade parishioners to remove the rune stone, and it is now positioned next to the tower.
A 1.85 m high rune stone is preserved in Flyinge, where something of a totally different nature also dating back one thousand years exists - horse breeding! It was the famous Danish bishop Absalon who started to breed horses here in the 12th century. This tradition continues today at Flyinge Kungsgård, the Swedish centre of horse breeding and equestrian sport.
